2K is the middleman and they're the ones getting that 88% instead of 70/75/80% and passing along a share to Gearbox. If there's enough of a user base once that money bin starts running low, it'll be less of a bitter pill for the publishers when Epic bumps their margin up to something reasonable, because then Epic can point to their established user base and say hey you'll get plenty more sales from the people on this platform who wouldn't be exposed to your game otherwise.Īlso, key word: publishers. They've already said exclusives will stop at some point, so it's a pretty safe bet that they're running this at a loss to get users. 12% margin, paying guaranteed minimum sales and (maybe?) up front incentives isn't going to keep them afloat once the Fortnite money bin starts running low. That's better than a year, but unless they Fallout76 it and release a crapfest I'll probably give in and get it through Epic.Įpic isn’t pulling any crap, unless you think 12% is a gimmick and they’ll increase it later. Usually I prefer to not root too much for things to die, but man I want Fortnite to die already so that Epic stops pulling this crap. I just hope they push back and only give 1-3 months of EGS exclusivity, but that's really just a dream.

Like yeah, it's fair that they want that money. Borderlands really was their last biggest title, Battleborn failed, Borderlands Pre-Sequel was meh (dunno how well it was received by the community), not sure about Homeworld, Bulletstorm was just a remaster.

They've helped on a number of games but haven't really published a successful full title for a number of years. What gets me about this one is that Gearbox doesn't especially need the buckets of money Epic undoubtedly offered them - Borderlands is a pretty well loved franchise and B元 is an easy win for sales.Įh, Gearbox probably does need the cash.
